With the rapid expansion of the freeze-drying market, an increasing number of equipment manufacturers are entering the industry. However, fierce competition has led to marketing confusion and inflated specifications. Some suppliers blur the definitions between total shelf area, effective loading area, and heat transfer area, misleading customers into believing they are purchasing high-capacity equipment at a low price. This creates significant traps during equipment selection.
The physical dimensions and configuration of an industrial lyophilizer are primarily determined by the total effective shelf area. The shelf area directly dictates single-batch loading capacity, drying cycle times, and the required cooling, vacuum, and heating loads of the lyophilizer. Therefore, precisely calculating the required shelf area is the essential first step in equipment selection and production capacity planning.
The shelf (partition plate) area is the core parameter of a freeze dryer (lyophilizer). The size of an industrial freeze dryer is mainly determined by the total effective shelf area, which directly affects the single-batch loading capacity and the drying cycle.
The calculation cannot be reduced to a simple rule such as “1 m² = XX kg”. It should be based on the actual product volume, combined with product thickness, density, moisture content and tray area. The correct method is to first obtain the volume of the wet product per batch, then divide by the loading thickness to get the required effective area.

V = M / ρ = 200 / 850 ≈ 0.235 m³
Where V = volume of wet product per batch (m³); M = batch wet weight (kg); ρ = bulk density (kg/m³).
A = V / h = 0.235 / 0.015 ≈ 15.7 m²
Adding a 10% safety margin for loading gaps, the recommended effective area is 17–18 m². If the usable area of a single shelf is 1.0 m², about 18 shelves are required.
W_water = M × w = 200 × 0.85 = 170 kg
The condenser (cold-trap) capacity should be at least 1.2× this value, i.e. ≥ 200 kg, to provide a safe margin.
Based on the above calculation, a freeze dryer with an effective shelf area of 17–18 m² is required. The KEMOLO processing-capacity-200 model meets this requirement and is a suitable choice for this application.
